I had a dental emergency come up. I was in tons of pain. Serious pain. Normally, I’m afraid of the dentist, but I was in enough pain that I went. I let the cavity get too far and I ended up needing a dental crown. The emergency dentist was super nice. He made room for me. He tried to be gentle. The only real problem I have is the crown doesn’t match the rest of my teeth. It’s just the temporary crown, but I’m guessing the permanent crown will look just like this temporary one. I really want my teeth to match. Is it possible for me to go to a different dentist or am I stuck with this one? I feel bad because it was nice of him to fit me in and work with me so patiently, but I don’t want to be embarrassed to smile. What do I do?
You don’t have to go back to this dentist. You may want to give him a chance before you switch dentists. Let him try to do a better job. If he isn’t able to, then you can switch. Just make sure you don’t let him permanently bond it on if you’re not absolutely thrilled with how it looks. A dentist can be a fine general dentist, but not very artistic with the cosmetic side of things. That’s likely what’s going on with this emergency dentist.
If he’s not able to create the gorgeous crown you want that matches your tooth, it’s okay to switch. He’ll understand, especially if he’s as kind and gentle as you’ve said. He’s ethically obligated to share all the details of your case with whichever dentist you chose next. The catch in this situation is time. A temporary crown won’t last forever, which means you’ll need to find a new dentist fairly quickly. Look at their smile galleries. If you love the smiles they create, go for it. The best cosmetic dentists have a beautiful smile guarantee. If you don’t like it, it’s not bonded. Period. They’ll send it back to the lab until it’s what you want.
Before you go any further, I wanted to mention sedation dentistry to you. You mentioned you’re normally afraid of the dentist. Many fearful patients have found that using dental sedation puts them completely at ease. It literally changes the way they view dentistry and saves them thousands of dollars in unnecessary procedures in the future because of neglect.
When you’re seen by the dentist regularly they can catch things early. A simple filling would have been so much easier of a treatment and saved you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
I hope this helps. This blog is brought to you by Dr. Ashley Price.
