Hi. Can you help me. I’m from Taiwan. I’m going to school in the U.S.. My tooth hurts very much. I want to go to a dentist here but my Grandma is worried they’ll put mercury in my body. I tried to tell her they have holistic dentists here, but she still wants me to fly home for care. What can I tell her?
It sounds like your grandma cares about you very much. Those are the best type of grandparents to have. Because she cares for you, that will work in your favor. She may not know this, but flying with a toothache is never recommended. The change in altitude will cause you a good amount of pain in your tooth. Additionally, you run a great risk of it blowing up into a large infection and turning into a dental emergency the longer you have to wait for care.
All around it’s better for your health if you get it treated before flying home. The good news is, you’re right, there are holistic dentists in the United States and their numbers are growing. They’re much more careful about the substances they introduce into your body.
In fact, there’s even a larger number of dentists, who though not holistic, are considered mercury-free dentists. They won’t place any amalgam fillings in your teeth, so your grandma doesn’t have to worry about you getting mercury-laden fillings.
