I am finishing up my Invisalign treatment. I’ve really liked it way more than I thought. No one knew I was straightening my teeth. No one. Now my dentist said I’ll need to wear a retainer for a while. I’m not thrilled with the idea of using metal on my mouth, especially after having an invisible treatment. Can I just use my last pair of aligners as a retainer?
I’m thrilled you’ve had a great experience with your Invisalign treatment. It’s got an extremely high patient satisfaction rate. It’s very comfortable and, as you’ve experienced, invisible even at a conversational distance.
While Invisalign aligners can straighten your teeth and even double as teeth whitening trays, they can’t be used as a retainer, which I’ll explain in a moment. First, I want you to know right off the bat that you won’t be stuck with an ugly metal retainer. There are other options.
The reason you can’t really use your aligner as a retainer is its design. They’re meant to be temporary. So while they may last longer than their two weeks intended use, they’ll start to get (and feel) gross. They’ll certainly also break down way before you’ll be done with the need for your retainer.
Retainer Options After Invisalign Treatment
- Traditional Retainers: These have the metal bar and not what you want but I wanted to mention it because it is an option.
- Clear Plastic Retainers: These look like your aligners and wrap around your teeth. Some of these can be decorated or you can have your favorite logo placed on it.
- Lingual Retainers: These are metal but they are attached to the back of your teeth. No one can tell you’re wearing them.
So, before you go around wearing a tattered, moldy aligner that is past its expiration date, talk to your orthodontist. Tell them what it is that bothers you about switching to a metal retainer. I’m sure he or she will help you pick the best solution.
