I’ve gone to the dentist on a regular basis even though I’ve never enjoyed it. The one thing he had going for him is he knew I was nervous in the chair and would take the time to answer my questions and make sure I understood what he was doing. But, he retired. The new dentist is not so patient with me. I had some questions about what he was doing during the last appointment. When I asked the third question he said, “We’ll never get finished at this rate and there are other people behind you.” I was stunned and too embarrassed to ask anything else. But, I also don’t think I can go back. I felt like I was an annoyance that was in the way of him getting more patients in. Is there a way to find a dentist more like my old dentist?
It sounds like your new dentist has more of a conveyor belt practice philosophy. He’s more about the number of patients he gets through in order to up his profits. Given your dental anxiety, you need a dentist who caters to fearful patients. You’re not going to get that with the new dentist so I’d not want you to go back there anyway. You need compassion.
In your place, I’d do an internet search for a new dentist using one of the following terms:
- Cater to Cowards Dentist
- Gentle Dentist
- Sedation Dentist
Dentists who advertise using these particular terms are often much more capable of working with patients who struggle with dental anxiety. However, saying your compassionate and actually behaving that way are two different things. Which is why I’m going to recommend you check their online reviews. It’s nice to have some data from patients who’ve actually been there.
Using Dental Sedation for Anxiety
Some patients, who suffer from serious dental anxiety find that their experience in the dental chair is completely changed by seeing a sedation dentist, especially when they use oral conscious sedation. It relaxes you so much that you’re able to sleep through the appointment in its entirety. It also allows the dentist to get a lot more work done at each appointment. If you need a lot of work this is a huge benefit.
Best of luck to you finding your new golden dentist. I’m sure he or she will be there.
