I was seriously considering getting Invisalign because my friend has bragged about how easy it is. However, when we went out to lunch yesterday I noticed hers were yellowing. Is that common?
I can see your concern. To answer your question, no this isn’t common, though it does happen. Here is how to keep your Invisalign incognito:
Don’t Use Toothpaste on Your Invisalign Aligners
Many people don’t realize whitening toothpastes are abrasive. They remove stains with their abrasive qualities. However, that also can cause tiny scratches. This would be disastrous to your aligners. Those scratches will cause them to pick up stains. There are special cleaners provided with your Invisalign. Use those instead.
Take Invisalign Out When You Eat, Drink, or Smoke
One of their benefits is the fact that there are no restrictions on your eating. However, you do need to remove them when you eat. That’s simple. But, many people with a smoking habit take a shortcut thinking they won’t need to remove them for smoking because they’re not chewing on anything. However, that smoke will stain your aligners, just as it does your teeth and lungs.
How to Clean and Disinfect Your Invisalign
Your dentist should have provided a cleaning kit for you. However, on the off chance you no longer have that you can use baking soda to brush them. It’s not nearly as abrasive as toothpaste. Just mix some with water and brush as you normally would.
If you need to disinfect them because you developed bad habits, a simple 50/50 mix of vinegar and water will get them nice and bacteria free in just 30 minutes.
Teeth Whitening and Invisalign
One thing your Invisalign aligners can do in addition to straightening your teeth is whiten them. The aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. This gives patients a mini smile makeover. You’ll have beautiful white teeth even before your procedure is completed.
If you take care of them, you’ll have no problems. In fact, Invisalign has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any dental procedures.
