I had a massive toothache. It was so bad, the whole side of my face swelled up. Even though I was pregnant, I knew I had a dental emergency on my hands and had to be seen. I made the decision that a holistic dentist would be a better option in my condition, but now wonder if that was a mistake. The dentist told me the tooth had to be pulled. I trusted them because they’re the dentist, but yesterday my sister told me when she was pregnant they did a root canal in order to save her tooth. She also said holistic dentists don’t believe in root canal treatments and that’s probably why my tooth was pulled. Could I have saved my tooth by going to a different dentist?
There is a very small, fringe group of dentists who don’t believe in root canals. Their thought process is there are microscopic holes where the bacteria can hide out. However, realistically, your body always has some amount of good and bad bacteria in it. This actually helps your immune system. If you never had any bad bacteria, your body would overreact every time you encountered some. Most dentists, including holistic dentists, believe in root canal treatments when it will help save your tooth.
More than likely, your sister’s case was much less serious than yours and a root canal was sufficient. It’s good you went to the dentist when you needed to. Some pregnant patients avoid the dentist because they worry about harming their baby. In a case like yours, which is likely a tooth infection, it’s a dental emergency. Leaving the infection is worse for your baby than having it dealt with.
As long as you’re not a high-risk pregnancy, it’s usually fine to have necessary dental work done while you’re carrying. A simple call to your OB-GYN will let you know if you’re safe to go. Generally, the second trimester is the most comfortable time to have work done for the patient.
I hope this helps put your mind at ease. The biggest advantage to a holistic dentist is they consider the health of your whole body (which will include your baby) in your treatment plan.
