All-On-4® Implants

Dental implants are titanium root forms that are surgically placed into the jawbone. They replace tooth roots and help stabilize the jawbone, which prevents bone loss. When bone loss has already progressed, bone grafting can rebuild the bone enough to support implants. But this procedure is out of reach for some patients. Dr. Palo Malo, a dentist from Portugal, created the All on 4 dental implants technique to help his patients who faced this situation.

What are All-On-4 Dental Implants?

The All On 4 dental implants technique uses just four smaller dental implants to anchor a set of dentures. The dentist places four implants in highly angled positions in the front of the mouth. While the technique can work well for people who might not otherwise be candidates for implant-supported dentures, it has associated risks you should be aware of.

All-on-4 Dental Implants Risks

The risk of failure for the All on 4 dental implants procedure is greater than the risk of regular implants. The photo shows the difference between a regular dental implant and the kind used in the All on 4 procedure. As you can see, the threads on the regular implant are longer and deeper, which make it more stable.

Although the All on 4 procedure is quicker and less expensive, if one of the smaller implants fails, the entire treatment will fail because it is not possible to repair just one part. In addition, because the procedure is used on people with less than normal bone density, there is a greater risk that there will not be enough bone structure to support the implant adequately.
